AFCA CHAPTER: Rwanda

About Rwanda

Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills” and “Land of Gorillas in the Mist,” boasts a vibrant culture and diverse landscapes. Despite being less than half the size of Scotland, it accommodates three million more inhabitants.

Nestled in the heart of Africa, Rwanda is over 1,500 kilometers from the nearest seaport. Despite its size, it showcases a variety of geographical features: mountains, volcanoes, rivers, lakes, marshes, savannahs, and forests like Nyungwe, East and Central Africa’s largest remaining montane forest.

In Rwanda, a day’s drive reveals a dramatic shift in wildlife from savannah plains to mountain gorilla sanctuaries. The densely forested slopes harbor rare mountain gorillas, while Akagera National Park hosts giraffes, buffalo, and elephants on its plains. The country’s high population density has cultivated much of its landscape, characterized by terraced hillsides often compared to those of Nepal or the Philippines.

Like its regional neighbors, Rwanda’s economy relies heavily on agriculture, with coffee as its cornerstone, accounting for 75% of export income. Additionally, staple food crops such as plantains, sweet potatoes, beans, cassava, sorghum, and maize play vital roles in its agricultural output.
